Some little drawing exercises

I don't know why but I don't like drawing these days.

Pencil on paper.

Drawing course, part 9

These are the shapes of the previous six days.

They were quite difficult. As you can see the inner shapes have soft values. To draw in this style is important for the next lesson.

Now there are only 6 shapes to draw. Then I have mastered the first big lesson of my drawing course. Puh.

Drawing course, part 8

These are the shapes of the previous days. I have drawn the top row on September 2nd and 3rd, the middle row on September 4th and 7th and the bottom row on September 8th and 9th.

This part of my drawing course comes to an end. The last two sheets of shapes will have softer inner shapes, not made by hatching but made of soft values. When I post the next six shapes you will see what I mean.

Now there 12 more shapes to draw.

Drawing course, part 7

These are the shapes of the previous days. I have drawn the top row on August 25th and 26th, the middle row on August 27th and 28th and the bottom row on August 31th and September 1st.

Though this whole lessons helps me to draw more accurately, it's beginnig to get boring. I feel that I want to go on to the next lesson to draw real things. I think that's a good sign.

Now there are 18 more shapes to draw.

Drawing course, part 6

These are the shapes of the previous days. I have drawn the top row on August 17th and 18th, the middle row on August 19th and 20th and the bottom row on August 21th and 24th.

Why do I tell you about the days? Because I want you to know that I draw every day.

As you can see, there are not only outlines. The shapes have inner shapes. So I can practise not only outlines but also more complete objects.

Now there are 24 more shapes to draw.

Drawing course, part 5

These are the shapes of the previous days. I have drawn the top row on August 12th, the middle row on August 13th and the bottom row on August 14th.

For me it's still difficult to draw the curves accurately.

The next shapes are different from the previous shapes. These shapes are not just outlines. They will have inner shapes. Stay tuned and you will see what I mean.

Now there are 30 more shapes to draw.

Drawing course, part 4

These are the shapes of the previous days. I have drawn the first row on August 7th, the middle row on August 10th and the bottom row on August 11th.

Though the finished drawings are very accurately, my level of accuracy is lower when I place the first dots. I think it's about 80 percent. I hope that it is much more than 90 percent when I finish all 60 shapes.

For the viewer this exercise might be boring but for me as the artist it's a very important exercise.

Now there are 36 more shapes to draw.

Drawing course, part 3

These are the shapes of the previous days. I have drawn the first row on August 4th, the middle row on August 5th and the bottom row on August 6th.

The shapes with the curves were really tricky. I have to find a method to copy them more accurately.

I have learned three things so far:

1. Trust your eyes.
2. Don't trust your eyes.
3. If you're an impatient person, you'll become patient with this exercises. Trust me.

Now there are 42 more shapes to draw.

Drawing course, part 2

These are the shapes of the three previous days. I have drawn the first row on July 30th, the middle row on July 31th and the bottom row and August 3rd.

On the first shape (left, row one) I didn't draw one point correct so one line isn't correct. But overall I'm happy that I can solve every single shape. I also have to become better with the correct line weight.

Now there are 48 more shapes to draw.

Drawing course, part 1

This is the result of the first three days of the drawing course I've created for myself.

I have drawn the top row on July 27th, the middle row on July 28th and the bottom row on July 29th. For every shape I needed one hour.

The six shapes on the left are the originals and the six shapes on the right are the copies. The goal was to copy the original shapes as accurately as possible. With this exercise I am able to train my eyes. Why? Because drawing is seeing.

I first measured by eye, placed a dot with the graphite pencil and checked it with a caliper. If the dot wasn't at the right position, I corrected it and measured again. And so on and so on. All lines were done freehand. I didn't use a ruler to draw the straight lines (except for the crosshairs).

There are 54 more shapes I have to draw. Puh.
